The Event

The Optics and Lasers Applications Symposium (Portuguese - Simpósio de Aplicações de Óptica e Lasers, SOL) aims to bring to undergraduate students, graduate and professionals interested in the area, the opportunity to attend presentations by renowned researchers, successful entrepreneurs (start-ups), and discuss with them new trends and opportunities that are emerging today for the applications of lasers and optics in Brazil. As topics of this meeting are:

• Lasers and Optics in aerospace applications.

• Laser materials processing (welding, cutting, surface treatment, shot peening, drilling and others.);

• Laser isotope separation;

• Optical materials;

• Optical sensors and fiber-optic sensors;

• Development of lasers;

• Optical Diagnostic techniques (optical instrumentation for characterization of ultrafast events, Schlieren and others).

The event is held for three days, with the first two days of presentations by national and international speakers, student poster session and a roundtable discussion on the current market conditions for professionals working in these areas. The third day will bring a series of short courses (tutorials) on themes related to the meeting topics and a visit to the laboratories of the Institute for Advanced Studies (Portuguese - Instituto de Estudos Avançados, IEAv).

The IEAv Student Chapter seeks through this event to create a permanent channel to gather Students, Professors/Researchers and Professionals in the Lasers and Optics Applications area, where the discussion of the issues and their possible solutions together with the new trends will be main agenda.

The Institute for Advanced Studies (IEAv)

The Institute for Advanced Studies, IEAv, is part of the Aerospace Technology and Science Department (Portuguese - Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia da Aeronáutica, DCTA), and concentrates its research efforts in the fields of Photonics, Nanotechnology, Hyperspeed, Propulsion with aspirated air, Decision Support Systems, Command and Control, High Performance Computing, Remote Sensing , Nuclear Energy and Electromagnetic Systems. Among the products and technologies developed the following can be cited:

• Fiber optic gyroscopes, already tested in helicopters and probing rockets;

• The laboratory of lasers and applications, the first in the country focused on the development of technological applications of laser and optical systems, focusing on advanced manufacturing processes;

• Software for radar image processing;

• Mission planning software and air defense;

• Software for design and analysis of electromagnetic devices;

• Sensor and thermal infrared imager;

• Hypersonic shock tunnel;

• Computer clusters.

The IEAv OSA Student Chapter

The IEAv Student Chapter is inserted in the Photonics Division of IEAv. It is in this solid base of human resources and infrastructure that the Optics and Lasers Applications Symposium has the technical and scientific support, with a final purpose of assisting the development of the area, whether through partnerships, or by training the human resources of the future, the Students.

Created on July 29, 2014, the IEAv Student Chapter is a group of 12 graduate and undergraduate students from IEAv / ITA with the objective of organize events and activities in the field of optics and photonics, which promotes the exchange of information and experiences among students, researchers, professors and professionals from various countries. Another important function of this student organization is to bring to the community that surrounds it, the basics of optics and photonics, demonstrating the benefits and the importance that this area of knowledge has for society.

The Chapter is based on the largest existing optical society today, The Optical Society (OSA), which has as members the most renowned names in the field. Using this link, the IEAv Student Chapter acts as a facilitator / mediator to bring some of these members to present lectures / courses and interact with our researchers and students in Brazil, strengthening our scientific and technological development.
